What "eco-friendly laundry" actually means at WashMe

Eco-friendly laundry is a laundering process designed to minimise environmental impact at every stage: the detergents used, the water and energy consumed per wash, and the emissions from collection and delivery. It is a measurable set of operational choices, not a marketing label. Here is how WashMe meets that definition, with the standard behind each claim.

Eco-certified, biodegradable detergents

Every wash cycle uses eco-certified, biodegradable, phosphate-free detergents. The benchmark for this category is the EU Ecolabel for laundry detergents — the European Commission's official environmental standard — which limits hazardous substances, requires the biodegradability of organic ingredients, and caps chemical dosage per wash. Phosphate-free formulas matter because phosphates drive algal blooms (eutrophication) in waterways.

Lower-temperature washing, where hygiene allows

Most cotton and everyday garments wash effectively at 30–40°C with the right detergent, which cuts energy use substantially against a default hot cycle. Heat is reserved for items where hygiene genuinely requires it. For hotel linen, towels and kitchen textiles we wash at 60°C or above: a peer-reviewed study archived by the U.S. National Library of Medicine found that washing textiles at 60°C or 70°C followed by tumble drying achieves effective decontamination. Our sort-and-wash process separates the high-temperature load from everything else, so only the items that need heat receive it.

Hard water, dosed correctly

The Costa del Sol sits on limestone geology, which makes local water hard — typically 200–400+ mg/L of calcium carbonate (regional water data, EMASA). Hard water greys whites and stiffens towels over time and pushes households to over-dose detergent to compensate. Commercial water softening plus metered dosing keeps whites genuinely white with less detergent and without the heavy optical brighteners that wear fabric down.

Rinse-water recycling and a hybrid delivery fleet

We capture and filter rinse-cycle water for reuse on appropriate subsequent loads, and our pickup-and-delivery fleet includes hybrid-engine vehicles — practical for the many short urban trips on a San Pedro-to-Torremolinos route.
