La Cala de Mijas: the beach town that works all winter
Half the coastal stops on our schedule go quiet in November. La Cala is not one of them. A large British and Irish community lives here all twelve months, so the weekly wash bag — not the holiday changeover — is the backbone of this round. Most of those bags come out of the low-rise blocks packed between the A-7 and the beach, a few streets from the Torreón watchtower that marks the middle of town. Parking inside that grid is scarce, so the driver gives a short WhatsApp warning and takes the handover at your portal.
July rewrites the route. Holiday lets around the boulevard and the seafront add changeover linen, and the boulevard's restaurant terraces bring tablecloths and napkins on top — hospitality clients there sit in our wholesale band of €3.75–5.75 per kilo by monthly volume. One thing never moves: collections run 19:00–21:00, Monday to Saturday. That window also dodges the Wednesday and Saturday street market at the fairground, which packs up around 14:00, hours before the van reaches the centre.
The third piece of La Cala sits uphill. Around Calanova and La Cala Hills above the town, and out towards El Chaparral on the Fuengirola side, new townhouse and apartment phases appear faster than satnav maps learn them.
